year eventually ends up in landfill.
All the textiles Town or Country remove during a house clearance
from a property are recycled either to charity shops or for foreign
aid or into new fabric.
WEEE, TV's and Fridges reprocessed free.
We have negotiated a deal that means we no longer have to
charge for the reprocessing of computers, monitors, TV's, fridges,
freezers and small electricals. So neither do our clients.
New mattress recycling facility.
At this time we cannot recycle mattresses and they go to landfill
along with the estimated 6 million others each year.
A new facility for recycling mattresses is opening in Bradford in
October. Town or Country will send all mattresses there for
recycling. This cuts down our tipping fees and increases the
already high amount we recycle.
Waste wood problem
Following a fire at the largest wood re cycler in the country there is
a glut and stockpiling of waste wood. Lower grade material is being
sent for composting or landfill.
The fees for disposing of wood are increasing but Town or Country
will absorb this extra cost and not pass it on to our clients.

Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations
The regulations apply to all landlords, estate agents, letting agents, charities selling furniture, and anyone selling
or supplying second-hand furniture as part of a business or trade.
The full DTI guide can be seen here; www.dti.gov.uk/files/file24685.pdf.
The regulations apply to all furnishings, and furniture, furniture coverings, and seat pads, and furniture used in
houses, gardens and caravans.
Foam/fillings used must pass the required test. The only way to ensure such compliance is to have an appropriate
and permanent display label indicating that the furniture/furnishings are safe. Examples of these labels are shown
in the DTI guide; www.dti.gov.uk/files/file24685.pdf.
The regulations apply to charity shops.
Legal Duty of Care for Commercial and Householder Waste Producers
Commercial concerns have a legal duty of care to ensure that the waste generated is removed and disposed of
properly, and in accordance with the law. Every organisation or business or individual householder is required to
take reasonable measures to ensure that they only transfer their waste to an authorised person. An authorised
person is either a Registered Waste Carrier, or site that holds a Waste Management Licence.
Businesses or individuals failing to take reasonable measures, regardless of whether the waste is fly tipped,
commit a criminal offence. And can be subject to a £5000 fine.
When arranging any waste to be collected you should: Ask the contractor if they are a Registered Waste
Carrier, and for their registration number.
Ensure you receive a waste transfer note.
